Chapter 6: Do You Remember the Poem?
EPOV

Esme made Emmett and Alice leave, even though the doctors were going to make an exception to the “only one visitor over night” rule. Apparently, I “needed my rest”, and Carlisle and Esme didn’t want them bugging me or finding trouble in the hospital. Alice gave me the biggest hug when they were leaving. She was so tiny, yet she cut off my air. Emmett came and gave me a hug, too. And he even kissed the top of my head. “You sleep and get better,” he said, “or I’m going to hurt you.” I saw Carlisle shaking his head at Emmett’s threat. I smiled and nodded at him.

Carlisle convinced Esme to leave with them. He pulled the same excuse on her that he had used on Emmett and Alice- I needed rest. She was hesitant at first, not wanting to leave me alone when she was afraid I would die at any moment. I gave her a small smile and she agreed. She came up, giving me a hug, as well. I could tell she was starting to cry. I could hear her sniffling and feel her breathing getting shallower. I rubbed her back soothingly as she kept me in her grasp. She didn’t let go for a couple minutes.

When she pulled away, she looked me dead in the eyes and put her hands on either side of my face. She tried to force a smile. “Edward, honey. Get better. You need to get plenty of rest and drink loads of water. Okay? I want you good as new tomorrow.” She hugged me once again, wrapping her arms tightly around my neck. When she pulled away this time, she left a kiss on my forehead. “I love you,” she whispered.

“I love you, too, Esme,” I whispered back. She left one more kiss to my cheek and walked away from my bed.

She walked back to Carlisle and gave him a hug and kiss. Then she started whispering to him, trying not to let me hear, but I could. “If he gets worse, I want you to call me. I don’t care what the circumstance is, but call. I need to be here for him.”

He smiled at her and chuckled a little at her concern. “Of course, honey. I’ll call you if anything happens.”

Carlisle kissed Esme one more time and hugged Emmett and Alice each. Then they left, leaving Carlisle and I alone.

After I ate the most disgusting meal ever, Carlisle and I watched some TV. “Glee” was on, one of my favorite shows, and it quickly caught my attention.

Carlisle and I watched the entire episode. A few minutes after it had ended, Dr. Fraser came into the room. He smiled a greeting at both of us.

“Have you done chest percussions, yet?”

“Oh, no,” Carlisle expressed, “I guess we got a little caught up in the television” he chuckled, turning the TV off and turning back to me. He gave me a small smile- an apology- because he knew I hated this part of the day. Dr. Fraser helped Carlisle adjust the bed and brought some extra pillows so I could get in the right position.

“Thanks, I got it from here,” Carlisle told him and Dr. Fraser left the room.

He walked over to me and helped me adjust some more. “Sorry, Edward. It’s got to be done. Especially now. You ready?”

I nodded and he started doing the chest percussions to my chest. I grabbed a tissue from the box Carlisle placed next to me and brought it to my mouth as I felt the tightening in my chest. I only coughed a few times during the percussions. The most came out during vibrations and huffing. There was quite a bit of blood in it, too. I was nervous at first, but Carlisle nodded his head at me in a reassuring way. “There’s going to be blood. Don’t worry.”

I flipped over onto my side and Carlisle started the process again, and then again as I flipped to my other side.

After twenty minutes, I was laying on my stomach while Carlisle worked on my back. At one point, I started choking on the mucus, but, thankfully, Carlisle was there to help clear my airways.

About thirty minutes after Carlisle finished, Dr. Fraser came back into the room. He took out his stethoscope and checked my lungs.

“You’re sounding good. Just drink plenty of water, and I would suggest doing another quick session of percussions before you fall asleep. We want to keep your lungs as clear as possible.

We did as we were told. Carlisle spent a few minutes on each side before I decided I was done for the day. “You want the bed up or down?” he asked as I situated myself for the night.

I sighed. “Just leave it down. It’s fine.”

He nodded and ruffled my hair. “Okay, just let me know if you need anything. I’ll be right here all night.”

“Okay. Thanks, Uncle Carlisle.”

He smiled. I knew it made him happy when I called him “Uncle”. Especially Esme- it makes her day when I call her “Aunt”.

I know it’s weird that I usually call them by their first names, but it’s sometimes awkward to use a title before their names. I always referred to them as aunt and uncle before my parents died- so did Alice and Emmett. But, after my mother passed away, and they took us in, things got a little confusing. They were our guardians. I felt like I should call them “mom” and “dad”. But, that wasn’t right. I was so young, too. I was a little mixed up and confused why they were acting like my parents. By the time I became a teenager, I had given up on figuring out what to call them and just started using their first names. They didn’t seem to mind. They never even acknowledged the fact that I didn’t call them uncle and aunt. Alice and Emmett caught on, too. So, now we all call them by their first names. Occasionally, we’ll call them aunt and uncle, but only when we feel like it’s appropriate.

“Goodnight, Edward. Try and have a peaceful night.”

I knew what he meant. He didn’t want me to dream about my mother- his sister-in-law. Of course, he didn’t want me not to dream about her, or forget her. He just knew that the one dream I always have of her turns into a nightmare- a real nightmare. A factual nightmare. A memory. A bad memory.

I sighed, praying I would have a dreamless sleep. I closed my eyes and let the darkness take over.

And once again I was in my mother’s arms. She was hugging me goodbye, squeezing me so tight. Alice and Emmett were nowhere to be found- out wandering the halls of the hospital. Carlisle came in before my mom left and said goodbye. She blew me a kiss and walked out the door. Later, Carlisle had his stethoscope and was checking my lungs while Alice fell asleep on the bed next to me. And a while later, Carlisle came back into the room. Something was different, though. He was crying.

I woke up with tears streaming down my face. I tried to quickly wipe them away, but soon noticed Carlisle was awake. I knew it was late- I just didn’t know how late. Carlisle was curled up on the recliner, and the little available light showed me his open eyes. He stared at me with concern and sympathy. I had woken him up with my dream. I saw the sleep in his eyes.

“Sorry, Carlisle,” I apologized.

“Don’t worry about it, Edward. Are you okay?”

I nodded. There were a few minutes of silence. I thought Carlisle had fallen asleep again, but then I heard him sigh. “Hey, Uncle Carlisle?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you remember the poem?”

He just stared at me, a little confused.

“The one my mom always used to say. About up and down?”

I saw the realization in Carlisle’s eyes. “Right, that one. I remember the first few lines. But not the end.”

Damn. I need to figure out the end… Before I die.

I nodded. “Goodnight, Carlisle.”

“’Night,” he replied. He didn’t question me about the poem. He just closed his eyes and went back to sleep. I tried closing my eyes, but didn’t have as much luck.

After getting about an hours worth of sleep, I felt like shit.

Carlisle seemed fine, though. But he wasn’t the one having all the dreams and sleeping in an uncomfortable hospital bed.

The doctor made me use the bathroom before he released me. He took the IV out and gave me my prescription. Carlisle and I were soon on our way home.

As soon as we walked in the door, Esme was there to hug me. She had obviously been waiting at the front window for my return. She was overly worried.

“Edward! I missed you so much! Are you okay? How are you feeling? Why are your eyes so red? Are you sick?” She quickly raised her hand to my forehead, feeling for a temperature.

I chuckled and gently slid her hand away from my head. “Don’t worry, Esme. I just didn’t get much sleep. I’m fine.”

Her brow creased. She knew why I hadn’t been getting sleep lately. They all knew I had the same dream almost every night.

I sighed and kissed her cheek before walking into the kitchen. I grabbed some toast Emmett had in front of him. “Hey! That was mine.”

“Emmett, you have five pieces in front of you,” I pointed out.

He scoffed. “So? I’m a big guy!”

I rolled my eyes at him and took a bite.

After finishing my toast, I went upstairs to gather all of my things. I hated leaving, but I was always so relieved to get away from everyone’s watchful eyes.

Chapter 7: Arrangements
EPOV

Alice and I had just made it back to our apartment. While I unpacked my bag from the weekend, she got a bunch of papers and forms together for her school transfer. She had to get her professors to sign them and the whole nine yards.

Just as I finished emptying my bag, Alice poked her head in my doorway.

“Hey, Edward,” she called and I looked over at her. “Umm, I talked to Bella, and we made some arrangements and-“

“What? What do you mean you ‘made arrangements’?” I cut her off.

She sighed. “She’s the only one within a five mile radius who knows you and can help take care of you. We made arrangements for her to move in here when I leave. Carlisle and I already talked to her about it.”

I huffed and glared at her. I didn’t need the family friend to come live with me and ‘take care of me’. I’m not a baby.

“Alice, how did you make arrangements in one day for her to move in?”

“Well, you know she’s been looking for a roommate. She wants to get out of the dorms and she took the offer when I told her about our situation.”

I pushed past Alice and walked to the kitchen to get a drink of water. “Alice, I don’t need some random girl to come baby-sit me.”

“Edward,” she groaned, “She’s not ‘baby-sitting’ you. Grow up! You need the help. And she’s not random. She’s Carlisle’s friend’s daughter, and one of my friends. Would you rather we get a complete stranger off the street?”

“Maybe I would.”

“Well too bad!”

Alice didn’t bother to talk to me the rest of the night. She was in one of her moods- well the mood she is in when she thinks I’m in a mood.

And I am not in a mood.

I just don’t feel like I need somebody to come take care of me. I’m not a charity case. And although Alice was right about me not really trying to take care of myself, I don’t need help from anyone else.

I know she’s just trying to help, but Alice is going overboard. I don’t understand why Carlisle wants me to graduate. I don’t get why they both have to keep such a close watch on me. This whole situation is just all so confusing.

But I know, in the end, I do need the help. And they all just want me to be around longer. They all have already been through so much with the passing of my father and then my mother. I wouldn’t want to cause any more pain for them

As I was walking to my room to go to bed, I stopped in Alice’s doorway. “Come in,” she called after I knocked.

I opened the door, but stayed in the hallway. I sighed in defeat. “When is she moving in?”

A small smile gradually spread across Alice’s face. “She’ll be here next weekend. That will give me one week to show her everything she needs to know before I leave.”

I just nodded, not really having anything to say. Alice got up from her desk where she had been drawing designs and came over to the doorway to give me a hug. She stood on her tiptoes and planted a kiss on my cheek. “Thank you, Edward. I promise it won’t be too bad.” I just nodded as she backed away. “Goodnight, Edward. Sweet dreams.” I smiled at her before walking into my room and sliding under the sheets.

And once again I was in my mother’s arms. She was hugging me, telling me goodbye. We were laughing at the fact Emmett could find trouble anywhere, even in a hospital. Then Carlisle was there, and my mom blew me one more kiss before she walked out the door. Carlisle checked my breathing and Alice was falling asleep on my hospital bed. And then, a little while later, Carlisle was back in the room. He was crying.

I awoke, rubbing my face to rid the tears. So much for sweet dreams.

I walked to the washroom to wash my face and get a drink of water before heading back and getting into bed again. I was able to get a few hours of sleep in- granted, I was waking up every hour or so.

The next morning I woke up exhausted. I was going to have to talk to Carlisle about sleeping pills or something because for the past few days, I have been running on empty.

I got out of bed and took a shower before getting dressed and walking out to the kitchen area. Alice was already showered and ready and had made scrambled eggs with toast and set a plate for me with a glass of orange juice. I thanked her and sat down to eat. We ate in silence, not really having anything to talk about even though there was plenty we should have been talking about. Like all the details with Bella. I only met the girl once or twice; and now I was expected to live with her. All I knew was that in one week, she would be moving in and Alice would be teaching her about my condition and everything she has to do.

In my opinion, she should be getting paid. This is like a full time job. She has to record all of my calorie intake and exercise and do chest percussions. It’s not like she just had to watch me and make sure I was breathing and everything. No, she actually had a fucking job to do.

So why did she agree? Why was she helping me?

Alice and I finished our breakfast. I cleaned the dished and put them away before Alice started pushing me to my bedroom. I laid down and positioned the pillows under me before Alice climbed on the best and started beating my chest with her hand. I grabbed a tissue and just waited for the tightening in my chest to start.

Once I started coughing, Alice decided to talk. She was smart. She knew to wait until I was incapable of talking.

“Edward, it’s not going to be too bad,” she started. “It’s just going to be like I’m here… except it won’t be me. There’s not going to be anything new. Nothing will change for you. You’ll just have a new roommate and you won’t be living with your favorite sister anymore.”

I laughed and that only made me start coughing more. Once my tissue was dirtied, I grabbed a new one. Alice must have seen the blood in the tissue and she stopped. “Oh my God! Edward! There’s more blood!”

I finished coughing and explained to her that there was going to be blood for a little while. She was hesitant at first, but she eventually started percussions again. She did vibrations and huffing, too, and then gathered her things to leave for class.

Once she got her portfolio from her room, she was heading out the door. She called out a quick goodbye before she left, and then I was alone.

I still had a half an hour before I had to leave for my music history class, so I went to my keyboard to pass the time. I started drifting my fingers along the keys, playing nothing in particular. I just let my mind wander, thinking as I played.

I reminisced my childhood. Back when I was actually happy- before I was sick, when I still had my parents. It seemed so much easier then. I was a kid, and I didn’t have much responsibility. Those days just seemed like so much fun… and those days are long gone.

When I was brought out of my thoughts by a car horn outside my window, I realized what I had begun playing. My mother’s favorite song. I don’t know the name of it, or who composed it. But, I remember the tune. And I guess that’s all that matters. I sighed before I got up, turned the keyboard off, and headed out the door.

My friend Jasper was waiting outside for me. He has a US history class at the same time and building that I have my music history class on Mondays, so we usually carpool. You know, save the ecosystem.

“Hey, Edward,” he greeted as I slid into the front seat. “How was the weekend with your family?”

I decided I didn’t want to go into detail about my life’s problems, so I simply answered, “It was alright. Can’t complain. How was your weekend with Maria?”

He rolled his eyes. “Well, not good actually. We broke up. I guess her friend Lucy told her I was cheating on her, and she believed it. I don’t get girls. They always trust each other, yet they all go behind each other’s backs. Lucy has no idea what she’s talking about. I would never cheat on someone.”

“Is Lucy the one Maria was always hanging around… cause I never liked that girl.”

He chuckled. “Yeah, that’s her. Maybe they should be together. They spend all their time with each other.”

“Yeah,” I laughed.

Once we made it to the building, we headed our separate ways. I spent the next hour and a half listening to a lecture on the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Half the students were asleep, but I was actually interested. Mozart lived an incredibly fascinating life. I guess you can’t please everyone, though.

After class, I met up with Jasper and we headed back to my apartment. “You want a bite to eat? I’m sure we could spare you a few scraps,” I offered.

“Sure, man,” he agreed and followed me up the stairs.

When we walked in, Alice was back from classes and was making macaroni. She didn’t bother to look up when we walked in; she just kept stirring the noodles in the boiling water.

“Hey, Edward. Did you take your medicine this morning? Carlisle said something about a prescription every morning and evening… Oh, hi,” she stood up straighter when she caught sight of Jasper after finally looking up from her cooking. “Um… are you staying for lunch?”

“If it wouldn’t be too much trouble,” he answered with a half-grin on his face.

Alice smiled in return, blushing a little. “Of course not.” She added more noodles to the water and continued stirring. I just watched their exchange with curiosity.

“Uh, Jasper, this is my little sister, Alice. Alice, my friend Jasper,” I quickly introduced them. Alice set her spoon down and turned around before offering her hand to Jasper. He accepted, shaking her hand as he chuckled.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Alice.”

“Likewise.” Alice’s face was beaming and I just rolled my eyes at them and walked over to the counter to take the prescribed medication.

Alice and Jasper seemed to click immediately and the whole lunch they chatted, pretty much excluding me.

After we all finished, Alice finally acknowledged me. However, it wasn’t about something I particularly wanted to talk about. “Edward,” she started, “can you hand me your calorie journal?” I sighed and reached behind me to grab the spiral. She took it from me and opened it to the correct page. “Have you had anything to eat today besides lunch and breakfast?” I shook my head and she continued to write. Jasper watched curiously before they started up another conversation.

This was going to be the beginning of a new relationship- I was sure.
