1. How did you get into fan fiction? Why Robert Pattinson fan fiction?
I’ve been writing Fan Fiction for many years. Going from fandom to fandom considering which fandom I’m obsessed with at the time. But I started in Band Fan Fiction for Good Charlotte and The All-American Rejects delving in a few other bands here and there and then when I was introduced to Robert Pattinson by a friend through his music I naturally fell into it from there.
I hadn’t heard of him until late 2008 and a friend gave me a link to a Myspace page with some songs on it sung by a guy named Robert Pattinson. One song in particular stood out, called ‘I Was Broken’ and I then Googled. I was then told about a movie coming out called Twilight which of course featured said singing god and I was talked into going to see it since I had no idea what the whole Twilight thing was about and yeah it started there.
I love writing about Robert because, from what I’ve seen in interviews, and candidly and stuff like that he’s very animated and honest and he has an incredible timing and humor that I think makes for an amazing character. Regardless of whether the Rob I’m writing in my stories is anything compared to the real Rob is moot because each Rob I write has something in them that I think judging by interviews and things he says has some sort of reality to them, but effectively each Rob is different, but they’re all inspired by an incredibly real, incredibly talented, incredibly gorgeous guy. Who better to inspire than him, right?
2. What made you decide to start writing fan fiction?
I was just roaming around the different fandom’s years ago and stumbled upon it. After I figured out what it was all about I read a few and I’m not gonna lie, a lot of them weren’t very good so I just decided that if I wanted to read something good I shouldn’t have to rely on other people to provide it for me so I started writing it myself. And I’m not under any false impression that I was awesome at writing from the very beginning, because I sucked. I‘m the first to admit that I sucked hard. But I worked on it, and got better and I’m still working on it. I think it’s a compliment to the subject of the Fan Fiction that their material, or their movies or them as people are so widely regarded, and so highly regarded that there are people out there willing and able enough to express that appreciation in the written word. I think it’s really powerful and I just wanted to be a part of that.
3. What is your writing process? Do you have a specific place you like to write, music you listen to, etc.?
My writing process basically includes myself, my laptop, and silence. I can write with music and sometimes if I’m really stuck I will use music to inspire the writing process but I do work better without distraction. I get lost in my head when I write. I’m concentrated on the character’s and the world only at that time and if I get pulled out of that world back into reality for whatever reason I tend to stay in that world until I pull myself out of my head. If I’m writing a sad scene or a poignant moment in a story and someone tries to talk to me I won’t make sense for awhile because my head will still be with my characters. I put a lot of myself into the characters so whenever I am writing I do get lost in their journeys and their relationships. But no, I can write anywhere, at anytime as long as I have my laptop. I don’t do the paper and pen, I’m too lazy.
4. How much research goes into the stories? Time spent on the internet? Personal experience?
Um, the only time I really research is when I’m looking up locations or train timetables. I do put a lot of myself as I’ve said into the stories so conversations, things like that, some of them do come from my life and my experiences. Some of the fights that have happened I’ve been through in my real life. But of course a lot of it just comes from some fucked part of my mind that is somehow trained in daydreaming. I do Google a bit, timelines and locations and stuff; little details that I get a kick out of more than anyone else ever would.
5. What is the hardest/easiest part about writing?
The easiest part for me in writing is coming up with storylines. I live in my head and daydream a lot as a sort of escapism if I’m over reality at the time, so I use that time to come up with storylines and think through plots and all that and yeah, they come easily.
The hardest part for me is probably two fold, uh finishing stories I start and living up to expectations. I start a lot of stories and some of them I have to give up on for whatever reason whether it’s because I didn’t really think the plot through or the characters just weren’t going anywhere or whatever. But that happens sometimes. Hit and miss.
And uh, the expectation thing. I have a lot of very passionate readers who expect a lot from my stories and from my characters and I do appreciate the support, I do, wholeheartedly, it’s just a lot of pressure sometimes to create a story that they want to read. I constantly remind myself that I don’t write to please other people, I write for myself and I try to live up to that mantra with every chapter, it’s just hard sometimes to divide my readers and what they want from what I want to write and what I want, but I’m working on it.
6. Out of the stories you've written which is your favorite? Favorite character? Why?
Jeebus! This is an unfair question; it’s like picking a favourite child. I don’t know.
Um, if I absolutely have to pick one I’d have to say probably Too Late For Lovers. Only because it’s not as long as my other stories, it’s straight to the point, it’s a bit naughty which is always fun and it didn’t take up a whole damn lot of my time.
I love all of my characters. I try to make all of my original female character’s come across as real people. I try to give them knowledge, and wisdom and a really brutal sense of humor because I think that’s really reflective of either who my readers are or who they wish to be like. I like to make people laugh so the sense of humor thing is probably the most important in all of my OFC’s. And also a little bit of crazy goes a long way. But if I have to pick one...I’d have to go with Ashby (Everpresent Everywhere) because she’s lost and yet she can still smile and I think that strength is admirable.
7. What do you think makes a good story?
Flow. If it doesn’t flow I’m not gonna read it. If it’s choppy and is hard to read I’m gunna be like “PEACE” and leave it. Likeable and relatable characters are a must. I don’t need smut to complete a story, obviously, since I don’t write A LOT of it. But I’m not against it. Just, as long as there’s a believable enough plot, a thought through structure and someone who has at least a moderate writing talent than I will read it. But if you write a story with conviction and it’s something you believe in regardless of how it’s written or the spelling than I think that speaks just as powerfully and will come across.
8. Is there any story (or book) you wish you could have written? Why?
I wish I’d written ‘I Love L.A’ by feathers_mmmm. It was one of the first Rob fics I read. George and Gracie sucked me in from the very first chapter and I was hooked. I loved it and Alice has actually been published so the book version doesn’t name Rob as the lead male but I still know it was he who inspired it.
Also, ‘Trapped & Bound’ by selenewolf. It’s remarkable how underrated some authors are simply because they’re new or because they don’t have as avid of a following as other’s. Her writing is so raw, and so magnetic that I started reading the story and was still up at 4 the next morning, pouring myself over her words. The story is incredibly angsty, and incredibly graphic but it had me in tears the entire time. The way this girl writes will send you on your ass and make you want to be better because that’s what she did to me. It’s amazing and if I had written it I would quit because there is no way I could write better than that again so, my hat is off to her and I strongly recommend any Rob fan go read it. It may be a trial, but I recommend you read it. The thing should get published.
9. Do you have any writing tips?
Believe in what you have to say and practice, practice, practice.
10. Who's your pick to be the next author interviewed? (This person will actually be it.)
twilight_writer1220 because Stepping into the Story is amazingly underrated.
From readers:
1. You are such a great writer (even though i'm not commenting or around as much im reading cause i love you) and are one of the authors that inspired me to write and post here so long ago. Do you have any authors fanfic or otherwise that inspire you? – London
Aww thank you, sweetheart. Hrrm, authors or stories that inspire me. I love an author named Jennifer Crusie, she’s, like no shit, must be the queen of sass. Her books are amazeballs and every time I read one I want to crawl into a hole and stop writing because she’s so damn good but if there’s a writer I’d like to be like it would be her.
2. Do your story ideas come out of nowhere in real life? - xxpunkgurl21xx
Some things can help an idea form in my mind for a story. Like, Everpresent Everywhere came to me while I was at a club with some friends. Uh…She’d Be New York came from a few friends going to New York at the time that story started. Too Late for Lovers was inspired by the song of the same name by Gin Wigmore. I normally have the initial idea and then think and think until I have a full plot in my head. So, yeah, I guess it’s a mixture of both ‘out of nowhere’ and ‘real life’.
3. What is the most important thing you have learned about writing that you would like to share with the other writers here? - m244robp
There will always be haters but you sort of have to learn to put that to one side and remember why it is you started writing in the first place. And write for yourself, not for everyone else, because once you start changing plots and writing styles to please readers, it totally shows.
4. How would you react if you actually had a chance to meet Rob? (this is a Rob-related site, right?) - m244robp
I’d shit twice and die.
No, haha, I honestly can’t even say how I’d react because it hasn’t happened. I’d like to think I’d be totally chill and totally impress him and he’ll totally fall in love with me, marry me, impregnate me and buy me a rundown loft apartment in New York that we can do up and raise our family in and get a dog, but y’know, I might just scream in his face and pass the fuck out. You never know. Haha.
5. What made you like Robert? Do you write Robert different then every one else? and what is you favorite Robert story that you didnt write? - queens_of_pattinson
Technically that’s 3 questions queenie. Lol Uh, what made me like him? First it was his voice and musical abilities, second it was his face (I’m not going to lie) and then it was his personality.
I’d like to think I write him different to everyone else. I like to think I make him my own, y’know Haha. I think all writers perceive him in a different way so yeah I’d like to think I do. I try to make him a little dorkier than others I think. Because that’s what he is. A big fucking adorkable dork.
And my fave Rob story I didn’t write would be either Just This Once, Taking Chances or I Love L.A which were all posted on twilighted.
Favorites:
- Book: Strange Bedpersons by Jennifer Crusie
- Movie: That Thing You Do
- Actor/Actress: Ethan Embry/Majandra Delfino (and Rob I suppose)
- Band: Rachael Yamagata
- Song: A Night Like This by The Cure
- Cookie: Toffee Pops (I don’t know if they’re made overseas but they’re the shit)
Last Words:
Is there anything else you would like to say or share with us?
I’d like to take this opportunity to get on my knees and thank every single one of my support team out there for believing in me and for loving me enough to stand by me and my insane Fan Fiction mind.
London and Sarah, my lobsters for supporting me, and sharing with me words and thank you’s of their own.
My Beta’s Beth & Dani, who hold my hand and talk me down from a cliff before I post over on Twilighted and over on here.
And to Katykat, who keeps me semi sane and loved and taken care of and for also listening to me rant and worry about the characters that take up far too much of my time.
And once again to each and every single one of you out there who read’s the shit I come up with and loves it just as much if not more than I do. I would love to name you all, but I don’t have that much time. I love you all and thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am flattered, humbled and floored by every single word you leave me. I would love to send you all tiny Robert’s if I could.
And of course thank you Christine for creating this amazing outlet. You’re a legend and I adore you.
